CURRENT CONTENT

The latest news about non-tenured faculty from around the globe. We've got news, reviews, interviews, profiles, professional development tips, opinion and round-ups of everything you need to know to keep up to speed on the ever-changing world of higher education.

FEATURES

THE JOB
In 2008, officials at San Antonio College were caught asking adjuncts teaching full-time loads to sign contracts that kept them from collecting additional pay and benefits. This February, adjunct faculty at San Antonio College in Texas were supposed to have been paid on the 12th. Their checks never came. To add insult to injury, the February 12th paycheck was to include a pay hike of 2 percent.

THE LAW
What's so different about Amy Bishop's existential meltdown that it doesn't get the 24/7 coverage that a mass shooting usually garners? For starters, she's a woman, rare in killings of this type. She has a Ph.D. ...from Harvard. There you go. She got her Ph.D. from the same place where Obama got his law degree.

MONEY
Every year, tuition at American colleges and universities goes up, but no one seems to really know why. In fact, the average cost of higher education in the United States increases at double the rate of inflation, and by increasing 8% each year, the cost of tuition doubles every nine years.

ANALYSIS

ANALYSIS
Are adjuncts in Maryland over-committed, under-engaged, or just plain disinterested in whether or not the state legislature should give them the right to organize? As the debate over their right to bargain collectively rages in the political arena, the state's adjunct faculty remain quiet and on the sidelines.

IN THE CLASSROOM

IN THE CLASSROOM
Teaching from a textbook used to mean cracking the book, deciding which chapters to use, adding in supplemental hand-outs, and getting the students to keep track of any and all changes. Macmillan is planning to introduce digital textbooks that faculty can revise to suit their needs and, yes, even whims.

REVIEWS

PAGES
A book that defends plagiarism, champions faked memoirs and declares fiction dead has the literary world up in arms.

PAGES
Novelist Sam Lipsyte talks about his new novel’s hilarious skewering of our dismal present and the creative-writing industry.

OPINION

FIRST PERSON
A full-time high school teacher writes about his path to teaching part-time in the college classroom.

IVORY TOWER
A recent graduate of Drexel University argues that making learning easier does not necessarily result in improved retention, especially if the facilitation allows students to recuse themselves intellectually from the classroom. Memo to IT: Get computers out of the college classroom.

UNCONVENTIONAL WISDOM
Do those with tenure have any moral or professional responsibility for those without tenure? The debate heats up in higher education, but particularly among theology faculty, and those who teach at Catholic institutions.
